Prenatal screening tests are a group of tests that all women are offered during pregnancy. These tests help assess the risk of the baby having certain chromosomal conditions, such as Down syndrome. There are different types of prenatal screening tests available, and not all tests are available in every country. Depending on where you live, you may be offered one or more of the following prenatal screening tests:
Prenatal screening tests are usually offered during the first or second trimester of pregnancy. Screening tests can't make a definitive diagnosis. If results indicate an increased risk for a genetic disorder, your healthcare provider will discuss your options for a diagnostic test to confirm the diagnosis.
